The Coleman 50B mercury analyzer is a flameless atomic absorption for analysis of Mercury. It is a complete system for the determination of mercury in the sub-microgram range. It's a 3-stage system: 1) chemistry; 2) Aerator; 3) flameless atomic absorption. A 100ml sample is treated with nitric & sulfuric acids in the presence of potassium permanganate to oxidize all the mercury present to the mercuric (Hg++) form. The excess permanganate is reduced with hydroxylamine hydrochloride and then the mercury is reduced to metallic mercury with stannous chloride. An aerator is placed in the reduced mercury solution. A pump circulates the air, in a closed loop system, through the solution. The air evaporates the mercury and carries it through the absorption cell. The mercury vapor, which is in atomic form, absorbs the 253.7nm radiation emitted from the light source (hence the term "flameless atomic absorption"). The change in energy transmitted through the cell is detected by a UV sensitive phototube. A narrow bandpass filter in front of the phototube permits transmission of only the 253.7nm radiation and makes the analyzer sensitivity to visible light rays minimal. Sensitivity: equal to 0.01 micrograms of mercury. Range (scale) 0-9 micrograms (x1 scale); 0-100 % Transmission (%T scale); 0-0.28 micrograms (x5 scale). Response time: less than 0.5 minutes over the entire scale range.
